Tea estates are very similar to wine vineyards. Estate teas are single-variety teas that are grown and processed at a specific tea garden. Most tea estates were started as commercial enterprises by the British, and consisted not only of the gardens themselves, but also processing facilities and housing for the workers who picked and processed the tea. Today, most tea estates are still commercial enterprises, but are either privately owned or are co-operatives owned by the workers. Because estates grow and process tea from the same bushes year-after-year, they have a great deal of experience processing and getting the best out of specific tea variety.
